Halloween Party Ideas

Countdown to Halloween Day 2011

Halloween is great reason to throw a party. You can transform your home with old tarnished items and inexpensive fabrics. Candleabras make perfect centerpieces for Halloween displays. Candles of all shapes and sizes are a must. Nothing feels spookier than a house lit by candlelight.

Haunting Displays

Transform table tops into haunting displays. Old photos displayed in old photo frames can be spooky. Take cues from the photos and incorporate them into your displays. Does the person look mean? If so, turn him/her into a crazy dentist. Make fake teeth and display them in an old tarnished dish with a pair of rusty pliers. Don't forget the fake blood. Use old medicine bottles labeled 'Novice Novocain'.

Decorations

Halloween decorations can be made from almost anything. Old water stained books are perfect and can be found at flea markets and thrift stores. Create a secret compartment in an old book by cutting out a hole in the pages of the book. If you're hosting a murder mystery, this makes a great spot to hide a clue.

Dripping Candle Wax Skull

Nothing says halloween like skulls and candles. Learn how to make our dripping wax candle. Ordinary household items are transformed into a decoration that can be used year after year.

Dripping Blood Messages

Guests will be haunted by a dripping blood message on a mirror or window. Make your own fake blood with our recipe below:
  • 3 tbs Clear Karo Syrup
  • Red food coloring
  • Blue food coloring
  • Pinch of flour
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Add mostly red food coloring with a small amount of blue until you get the desired color. Don't add too much blue or you will end up with purple. The flour gives the 'blood' depth and make it look more real.

If you are writing the message on a mirror it is best to take the mirror off the wall and lay it on a flat level surface. Put the fake blood in a lunch baggie and snip a small hole in one corner of the bag. Once you finish writing your message, allow the mirror to lay flat for at least 15 minutes to allow the 'blood' thicken a bit. This will prevent it from dripping too much and making a big mess. We recommend you practice a few times with a test message before you write the final message. Here are a few other other message ideas:
  • Go Away
  • Save Me
  • I See You
  • Help Me
  • You're Next
  • Boo

Zombie Monster in Coffin

Make your very own coffin to display a zombie monster. The make the coffin you will need the following materials:
  • 20 Empty 12 pack soda boxes
  • Tape
  • Large flat piece of cardboard
  • Spray paint - black and gray
  • Fake spider webs
  • Fake spiders and insects
  • Battery operated strobe mini light
  • Zombie and large spider
Stack two soda boxes on top of each other and tape together. You will end up with 10 stacked boxes. Assemble the boxes into a coffin shape and secure the shape with tape. Cut a large piece of cardboard to the shape of the coffin and tape it to the back of the soda boxes shaped like a coffin. Spray paint the coffin with black and gray paint to make it look old and realistic. Once the paint is dry, place a zombie in the coffin and stretch fake spider webs over the opening of the coffin. Stick fake spiders and other bugs to the spider webs. Stand the coffin upright and place a mini strobe light at the bottom of the coffin pointing up.

Cocoon Man

Make your own cocoon man. Why spend hundreds of dollars on creative decorations you can make yourself. To make a cocoon man you will need the following materials:
  • newspaper
  • cardboard
  • packaging tape
  • cheese cloth
  • fake spider webs and fake spiders
Start by making the body parts with newspaper. Make each part individually - the head, arms, legs and torso. Use tape to secure the newspaper pieces and to hold the shape. If you plan to place the cocoon man in a standing position you will need to reinforce the legs with cardboard. Once all the individual body party are made, assemble the body using tape to hold the body parts together. Cross the arms over the chest and secure with tape. Once the body is assembled, wrap the entire body with at least one layer of cheese cloth. For the final step, stretch a few layers of fake spider webs over the entire body and finish by adding fake spiders. You can hang the cocoon man upside down or stand him in an upright position.

Party Food

Change the name of normal party food to create ghoulishly tempting treats. Gross food is perfect for halloween entertaining.

   Blood Clots - Salsa
Pertified Bat Brains - Candied Nuts
Vampire's Delight - Punch of your choice
Zombie Vomit - Cheesy Crab Dip

Lunch Meat Head

The lunch meat head is always a hit at a halloween party. To make this disgusting centerpiece, cover a plastic skull with a thin layer of cream cheese. Next, cover the cream cheese layer with thin pieces of ham. Cut a green olive in half to expose the pimento and place one in each eye socket. Put the lunch meat head on a platter and surround it by your favorite finger food. We used cheese cubes.

Sick Vomiting Pumpkin

Creepy food is a must at a halloween party. The sick vomiting pumpkin is always a hit. Any sour cream based dip will do. We used Knoor's spinach dip recipe. The recipe can be found on the back of the Knorr vegetable dip package.

Carve a small pumpkin with a sick expression. See our sick pumpkin photo below for an idea. Place it on a tarnished, but clean serving tray. Spoon the dip onto the serving tray to the make it look like the pumpkin is vomiting. Make sure 'vomit' is oozing out of the pumpkin's mouth and nostrils. Then arrange crackers or chips around the vomiting pumpkin. Your guests will be sick with envy over your creativity.

Games

A Halloween party is the perfect time to host a mini murder mystery. Ask guests to come dressed as famous detectives or crime solving heroes. Hide clues throughout the party displays and reward guests with clues for doing various tasks such as trying the zombie vomit. Haunted Hands is another fun game that will keep guests entertained. Divide guests into equal teams. Give each team a pair of latex gloves and a pack of bubble gum. Each player must put the gloves on, open a piece of gum and put it in his mouth. The first team to finish wins a prize.
