Block Party Theme
A block party is a great way to meet new neighbors and get reacquainted with old neighbors. Invite several neighbors and consider a couple dates before choosing the exact date that is best for everyone.
Ask a couple neighbors to bring a grill. This will ensure food is cooked quicker and eliminate time spent at the grill. It is best to provide a variety of foods to ensure there is something for everyone.
Make sure you have several trash cans available to make clean up quick and easy. Provide recycling bins to ensure everyone recycles. This will also teach and encourage families that don't currently recycle to start.
Invite local law enforcement or the fire department to your party. Most local government agencies will provide free community activities such as, D.A.R.E., police dog education, fire safety, and home safety. Ask the local fire department to bring a fire truck and offer a demonstration. Local involvement will make your block party safe, fun, and educational.
Activities
Plan block party activities to keep children occupied.
- Fill several water balloons and have a water balloon fight to stay cool.
- Ask the children in the neighborhood to decorate their bikes and have a bike parade throughout the neighborhood.
- Create an obstacle course and have a bicycle obstacle course race.
- Provide classic toys such as jump ropes, frisbees, chalk for hopscotch, marbles and jacks.

Give guests something fun and interactive to do and get them involved in some games and activities.
- Frozen t-Shirt Contest - Ask local businesses to donate several t-shirts. Get the t-shirts wet and fold into small squares. Place freezer paper between each shirt and freeze. The winner of the game is the first to put on the t-shirt. Allow players to be creative - some will come up with creative ideas to thaw the t-shirt.
- Trivia Contest - Have a trivia contest with different facts about the neighbors. Ask questions about where families are originally from, favorite things, etc. The winner is the person who gets the most questions right. You might also want to prepare a bonus question in the event of a tie.
